Sanja Matsuri

Sanja Matsuri (三社祭), or the Three Shrine Festival, is one of Tokyo’s largest and liveliest Shinto celebrations. Held each May in Asakusa, it honors the three men who founded Sensō-ji Temple. For three days, crowds gather as mikoshi — portable shrines — are paraded through the streets, accompanied by music, dance, and the energy of over a million visitors. Here's a few photos from 2023.
